Being a Christian is more about having a relationship with God, than obeying religious duties.
Your religious works will not save you, only faith in Jesus Christ will.
If you truly believe in Jesus, your actions will follow that belief. If you really have faith that a chair will hold your weight, you will sit in it. If you really believe Jesus, you will follow (to the best of your ability) what He says.
Christians will grow in good works but salvation is not dependent on them.
The thief on the cross didn’t have a chance to put works to their faith. They didn’t even have a moment to get baptised. Yet they went to heaven with Christ because of their faith in Christ.
